The 19th annual Soweto Marathon will be run on the 1 November 2009. You don't have to be fit to participate - other than the standard 42.2km marathon, there's also a 20km Walk, a 10km race and a 5km Fun Run.

The marathon starts and ends at the Elkah Stadium in Soweto and the route it covers can be considered a tour of Soweto. The runners will race past the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's house, and Jabulani Mall.

The Soweto Marathon is one of the more lucrative road races in South Africa and the winner's pot in the past has been R1million.

The entrance fee for runners is R65.00 and entry closes on 23 October 2009.
